The wooden hen broods over peacock eggs, which Trimalchio pretends contain live embryonic chicks. In fact, they are pastry eggs that conceal fig-peckers wrapped in peppered egg-yolk. The Italian candy company Ferrero makes a version of this today: the Kinder sorpresa, a chocolate egg containing a small plastic toy. Choking hazard!
